Lions of Science (LoS) is a charitable organization registered in Nairobi and Berlin. It aims to yearly award Kenyan college and university students in Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) for their creative and innovative, early-stage projects and research proposals.
Our main objective at LoS is to promote science, innovation and research through holistic capacity building, entrepreneurship and increase the retention and empowerment of women in STEM through LoS Hub, LoS Academy and the annual LoS Awards Challenge. Lions of Science is currently operational in Kenya and looks forward to rolling out its activities to other East African countries.
The LoS Awards Challenge
Lions of Science annually awards young innovative Kenyan university and college students in the STEM fields and recent graduates (less than one year) for their innovative, early-stage projects. This year,2016, Lions of Science aims to also support and award the best research proposal and thus has added a research category to the LoS Awards Challenge. LoS has also spread its wings to the East African region and is also receiving projects and research proposals from East African university and college students.
The projects and research proposals have to ultimately aim to improve socio-economic standards of living in their respective communities, in Africa and internationally. LoS Awards include prize money which is for further development of the projects, professional mentorship and project incubation from our LoS partners like iHub and NaiLab with the objective of supporting students to unfold the potential of their projects.
Who can apply for the LoS Awards?
Applications are open to all enrolled college and university STEM students across East African region and recent graduates(less than one year) on different LoS themes. Applicants are invited to submit their projects to the LoS website on the submission page within a set period of time after which a rigorous evaluation is conducted by an internal panel of experts who shortlist the qualifying projects.
The shortlisted applicants are equipped with knowledgeable trainings and seminars through the LoS Hub. This prepares them for the final challenge during the LoS Awards ceremony where they finally present their projects before the jury and an audience who carefully assess the projects presented and the winners are proclaimed and celebrated.
LoS works hand in hand with domestic and international institutions who other than offering internships, incubation and mentorship, facilitate entrepreneurship programs at the LoS Academy to ensure success in STEM and Innovation for the social and economic benefits to the society.
