    March 11, 2016

    Women’s only workshop 2016
Lions of Science held a Women’s only workshop on 11th march 2016 at the LoS hub. The event had an attendance of a hundred students who represented students from different colleges and universities across the country.

The theme of the day being “Sustaining the inclusion of women in Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM)” and the slogan of forum “I can do this”. The participants had the chance to interact with facilitators from different fields.

The focus of the workshop was to ensure that participants understood:

    • The opportunities available in STEM fields

    • The power of interaction and networking within the STEM fields

    • How to effectively communicate  STEM

    • The  relevance of their  exposure to  local and international trends in STEM across the world

    • How to translate what they learn in school to real life

    • How to set and meet their targets

    • How to write their curriculum vitae, cover letter and present themselves at interviews.

The workshop’s key guests were Dr.Deo Onyango from GE Power & Water and Vincent Otieno Odhiambo from ASHOKA. The other speakers included Philip Ogola a Social Media Consultant and Publisher of Timeout Magazine, Dr.Millicent Alooh a Bio medical engineer, Miss. Etta Madete an Architect , Dr. June Kazira an engineer, researcher and senior lecturer at Kenyatta and Dr. Susan Musembi a biotechnologist and a mentor at the Chandaria Business, Incubation and Innovation  center.

The key message from the speakers was an insight into their different career paths and how they landed into the organization /workplaces they are now. Importantly is how people take different journeys to their career paths and the belief in oneself to be able to make it in life. The ladies were challenged to stay focused, push their boundaries and ensure actualization of their passion in STEM into careers.

Additionally, they were encouraged to be more proactive in clubs and societies in their institutions as a way to launch out into their careers and as a way to network with colleagues in the STEM field. Emphasis was also laid that there is need for them to be creative and innovative in order to address the challenges we face in society today. This based on the fact that Vision 2030 is pegged on Science and Technology as its driver.
